A postpartum doula is not a baby nurse. I am an experienced, non-judgmental professional who comes to your home and provides educational, emotional, and physical support following the birth or adoption of a new baby. A postpartum doula does not focus solely on the baby, but rather ensures the well-being of your entire family.
How can a postpartum doula help when your baby is here?
As your postpartum doula, what I do changes from day to day, as the needs of your family change. I do whatever you need to best enjoy and care for your new baby each day. A large part of my role is education. I share information about baby care with parents, as well as teach siblings and partners to “mother the mother”. I also assist with breastfeeding education and making sure you are fed, well hydrated and comfortable.
I help new moms by creating a safe place for them emotionally. I help relieve some of the pressure on a new mother by helping her move into her new responsibilities gradually. I make sure that the mother feels nurtured and cared for, as well as making sure she is eating well and getting enough sleep.
Postpartum doulas are knowledgeable professionals. Darcy Sauers of Dover Doula is trained and certified by DONA International.
